An exciting opportunity exists for a fund controller to join a growing specialist asset management company. The candidate will work closely with the investment team. The role will cover aspects of portfolio balancing, trade implementation, through to fund control of the externally administered funds.

The ideal candidate will be a CA or CFA with experience within the financial services industry. Key “soft skills” include: ability to work in a smaller environment, be a team player, use initiative, be organised and plan ahead and think laterally.

Fund Operations
  • Day to day support and execution of investment managers activities.
  • Implementation, monitoring and administration of day to day trades and cash flows.
  • Implement new or changes to instruments, providers, products and manager details or related agreements.
  • Review of cash and scrip reconciliations and liaising with external parties to ensure outstanding items are resolved timeously.
  • Capturing/implementation of investment decisions and ensuring portfolio accurately reflects these transactions.
  • Manage the monthly fund reporting process.
Fund Control
  • Data Management using outsourced administrator’s and service provider’s systems.
  • Reporting and accounting, through NAV oversight and fee oversight.
  • Relationship Management with front office and external stakeholders.
  • Operational Support, including oversight on all fund administration functions.
  • Pro-active management of service levels with investment administrators and management company.
  • Ensure that relevant processes are documented, adhered to by all involved and continuously improved.
  • Monthly reports/accounting reconciliation between trustees and Manco for unit trust funds and resolution of reconciling items.
Trade Implementation
  • Calculate and implement trades across various funds, investment strategies and currencies. Includes ability to work under timeline pressure and be exceptionally accurate around rebalancing a portfolio and FX implications. Trade pre- and post-compliance.
  • Relationship Management with local and offshore brokers.
  • Timeous re-alignment and management of fund cashflows.
  • Transition current fund control processes to iress.
  • Manage Manco transition for one of the funds.
  • Trade implementation project for the business as a whole.

Internship programmes
We are looking for exceptional graduates to participate in our trainee analyst programme. Successful candidates can expect on-the-job training. You will work with experienced industry professionals and will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the Northstar team.

Candidates should have
  • Relevant Post-graduate degree or professional qualification (e.g. BCom (Hons), PGDA, BBusSc, B.Eng, MBA)
  • Relevant professional qualification (e.g. CFA, CA) would be an advantage
  • Excellent academic record required
  • Willingness to work long hours
  • Self-motivated, passionate, and curious
  • Exceptional analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to structure and lead research projects
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner and have a natural curiosity about a wide range of industries and companies
  • Highly numerate and detail oriented, with the ability to work and communicate within our team driven environment
  • A sound technical foundation in valuation as well as strong Excel and PowerPoint skills are a prerequisite, whilst a working knowledge of Bloomberg will be advantageous
